Our architectural foundry has the complete range of these Adams heart castings. This particular balcony was in such a poor state that we cast entirely new ones in LM8 aluminium.

Originally these castings were made in a soft green sand, so when the casting cooled and shrunk in the mould, the sand moved and prevented the casting tearing and cracking on sharp junctions with thin sections. Today's modern sands use strong resins to bond the sand together which prevent movement; therefore the casting tears on contraction, producing a very fragile casting. This problem can be overcome, but it results in more work and therefore is more expensive.
