Demax received a request from clients to produce a design for a feature staircase in their harbour-side home in North Wales. The room had limited space in which to allow a view through the hall to the dining room and harbour view. Both the architect and client were delighted with the result, which can be seen to be a vast improvement over the original old-fashioned wooden stairs.

The design was to include white Italian marble treads and risers, the contoured sides (strings) were then hand-painted with a matching marble effect. The handrail and balusters are satin finished nickel; the balusters designed to compliment the existing columns at the dining room entrance. The soffit was plastered and incorporated concealed lighting. Note how the wide underneath edge of the string gives the illusion that the string is marble.

This style of staircase would be equally elegant using either stone or timber treads. We have an unlimited range of baluster designs varying from traditional castings to ultra modern styles. We are able to construct this model of staircase to practically any format within the limits of the Building Regulations. The advantages of this method of construction are its versatility, flexibility in the shapes achievable, compliance with fire regulations, whilst remaining relatively light and extremely rigid. These staircases are fully constructed at our works, complete with balustrading and handrails. The attachment of balustrades and handrails to staircases which are already fixed on site can be problematic and are more expensive and time consuming, especially for helical and winding stairs available. Clients are welcome to visit our works and showroom at either the enquiry or design stage, to gain ideas from our range of staircases on display. You would also be welcome to attend during construction and upon completion, allowing you the opportunity to adjust the design and avoid surprises. We offer this full service at the most competitive rates. We are also able to offer this model of stair with a timber handrail.
